Orange LifejacketThough not the most fashionable items, lifejackets have been proven to save many lives during boating accidents. In fact, approximately 80 percent of boating fatalities can be tied to individuals not wearing lifejackets. But slapping a random lifejacket onto your body won't always do; you'll need one that fits correctly.

Because lifejackets are designed to keep your body afloat, it's crucial that they fit snugly so they don't slip off over your head. This is especially important for children, who probably won't fit into adult sized lifejackets. And while adults can often be trusted to put on a lifejacket if trouble arises, children should wear a lifejacket for the entirety of the boat ride.

Fitting A Lifejacket

An easy way to properly fit a lifejacket is simply to put it on and test its snugness. Once it's clipped and/or zipped closed, stand with your hands in the air and have a buddy try to tug the lifejacket upwards. It should not ride up. Be sure that there's a properly fit lifejacket for everyone on board — both adults and children — every time you leave the marina.

Types Of Lifejackets

Today's lifejackets aren't all made of thick neon orange foam. There are many options to keep you safe and comfortable, including:
  • Jackets that inflate upon hitting water
  • Thin, flexible lifejackets
  • Fishing vests with built-in lifejackets
The options are numerous, and you can talk to professionals at your local marine supply store to find the right jacket for the activities you have in mind.

Before the beginning of each boating season, take a look at all of your lifejackets. Any damages — such as wear and tear, fading, waterlogging or decreased buoyancy — can render a lifejacket useless in an emergency situation. Be sure to toss damaged lifejackets and replace them to help ensure a safe, fun summer on the water.

Be sure your policy covers lifejackets and other equipment. Call Raymond Preston & Reed, LLC at (615) 866-2728 for more information on Nashville TN boat insurance.
