Restaurant InsuranceIn this day and age, we always face a certain degree of theft risk. Our home, vehicles and businesses could all become targets of thieves if we don't take proper precautions.

Many thieves choose to hit restaurants because they believe they might have access to quick, hard cash inside the business.

Most restaurant insurance policies cover instances of theft. However, restaurant owners should be aware of the theft risks that exist within the store. That way, they can take proper security steps to protect the restaurant from theft.

Reducing Theft Risks In Your Restaurant

Keeping a restaurant safe from theft comes with a lot of work. Restaurants see multiple people pass through their doors every day. Locations and even security practices pose theft risks. To make your restaurant safe from theft, keep these tips in mind:

  • Understand your restaurant's location. No matter where you operate, there's always a chance random passersby could gain access to the restaurant. Make sure you keep an eye on certain entry and exit points, and also take note of any local instances of theft.
  • Keep an eye on patrons. Everyone who walks through your doors could steal money, utensils or other items from the restaurant. You shouldn't unfairly target or discriminate against any patrons. However, be sure to learn to notice signs of suspicious behavior. It may take a while to pinpoint a shoplifter, but doing so means you can involve the proper authorities.
  • Hire reliable employees. Employee theft is a real risk in any environment. Wait staff might steal tips, overcharge customers, and even take money out of the cash register. Ideally, you should only hire employees who you know have a reputable background as a server.
  • Work only with trustworthy food vendors and utensil suppliers. Disreputable business practices by vendors may defraud the business.
  • Install a strong security system throughout the business. Use cameras, an alarm system, and other deterrents to keep potential thieves out. Many restaurants also have automatic lights and bell systems designed to alert authorities in case of break-ins.
  • Keep your restaurant's cash assets very secure. Make sure that only trusted employees can access safes, cash reserves and your registers. It is often a good idea in most businesses to keep only a small amount of cash on hand. Depositing profits in a bank guarantees a higher level of protection.
  • Store the restaurant's hard assets (such as china, silverware and expensive utilities) in secure places. Enforce an opening and closing procedure that includes securing the premises.
Last but not least, purchase a reliable restaurant insurance policy. With the correct protection, you can reduce the losses theft may cause the business. Doing so will allow you to better protect your assets.
