Your Exposure Analysis
Here's what a lawsuit could reach.
Total Estimated Exposure
This is the figure a plaintiff's attorney evaluates when deciding whether to pursue — and for how much.
Asset Breakdown
Future Earnings — Garnishment Ceiling
25% of est. disposable income × years until retirement
Total Estimated Exposure
Why 25% for future earnings? Under the federal Consumer Credit Protection Act (CCPA), wage garnishment is capped at 25% of disposable (after-tax) income per pay period — the legally enforceable maximum a creditor can collect from wages in any given period. This tool estimates disposable income at ~68% of gross (reflecting a blended ~32% effective tax rate), then applies the 25% CCPA cap across remaining earning years. This is an estimate. Actual disposable income, tax rates, state exemptions, and judgment enforceability vary. Consult a qualified attorney for advice specific to your situation.
How the 25% Garnishment Limit Works
Federal law (CCPA) caps wage garnishment at 25% of disposable (after-tax) income per pay period. This controls the pace of collection — not the size of the debt. A judgment large enough will accrue interest and remain enforceable until fully satisfied, which can take decades for high earners.

Umbrella coverage is among the most cost-effective protection available. $1M typically costs $200–$400/year. $5M may cost as little as $500–$800/year. The premium is minimal relative to what's protected.
